Program Administrator

The program will be administered by the industrial hygienist of the HSSE Department.

The industrial hygienist is charged with the general management of the Respiratory Protection Program. The responsibilities include: 

  • Approval of the purchase of respirator types and brands made available on site.
  • Performance of Hazard Assessments upon request.
  • The proper selection of respirators.
  • Arranging for and/or conduct fit-testing.
  • Arranging for and /or conduct training.
  • Program evaluation.
  • Maintenance of records.
  • Maintenance of the site written respiratory protection program.
Line/Area Supervisors

Line supervisors are responsible for:

  • Ensuring engineering controls are implemented to control potential employee exposure to hazardous chemicals;
  • The enforcement of procedures defined in this document;
  • Conducting task hazard analysis and bringing any suspect task, operation, or chemical exposure to the attention of the HSSE;
  • Department for further evaluation regarding the need for respiratory protection; and
  • Providing required information to contract employee’s physician for medical evaluation.
BP Naperville Medical Department
It is the responsibility of the BP Naperville Medical Department to determine the capability of an individual to perform assigned tasks while wearing the respiratory protective equipment determined appropriate by the Program Administrator. The BP Naperville Medical Department will inform the Program Administrator whenever there is a change in the employee’s ability to wear a respirator. Contract employees under direct BP supervision will be medically evaluated by their physician.
Employees

Employees are responsible for:

  • Making arrangements with the BP Naperville Medical Department for evaluation for fitness to wear a respirator;
  • Adherence to procedures regarding the proper use, inspection and maintenance, cleaning, proper storage of respiratory equipment assigned to them;
  • Reporting any malfunctions or damage of the respirator immediately to their supervisor or the Program Administrator;
  • Notifying their supervisor and the BP Naperville Medical Department if they experience any physical or psychological symptoms, illness or injury that might temporarily or permanently affect their ability to wear the assigned respirator;
  • Attending scheduled annual training and fit testing for required respirator users; and
  • Employees who are Emergency Response Team (ERT) members are responsible to conduct and document monthly inspection of emergency use respirators.
Contractors
  • Contractors are responsible for the administration of their own respiratory protection program as needed and determined by the contractor.
