BP’s Clear Desk Policy is that all valuable or sensitive information should be adequately protected when unattended. This is best achieved by completely clearing working areas of all such information at the end of the working day.
For secret or confidential information, the following actions must be carried out for any absences of more than a few minutes, unless other trusted colleagues will be in attendance, or a secure environment has been provided:
Secret or confidential materials must be cleared from working areas and securely locked away in appropriate containers. This includes any sensitive items which have not yet been assessed, plus any secret or confidential proprietary third party documents;
Personal computers and terminals must be switched off or protected against unauthorised access (e.g. use of a password protected screensaver), Laptops containing secret or confidential information must be securely locked away if you will be away from your work station time for more than a brief period of time. CDs/diskettes/tapes/flash cards/ thumb drives, etc. containing secret or confidential information must be securely locked away;
Flip charts, posters, and wall displays containing secret or confidential information must be removed, and black/white boards wiped clean; and
during brief absences (e.g. lunchtimes), work rooms and working areas must be securely locked and any necessary steps taken to ensure that secret or confidential information cannot be seen from outside (e.g. curtains closed).
Secret or confidential information must never be left unattended and unsecured.
For valuable or sensitive information that does not meet the threshold for secret or confidential classification the protections above are recommended but not mandatory (i.e. for "must" read "should" in the text above.
